Installation procedure (to be done on each Web Front End) :
  1. Unzip the WarmUp.zip to the SharePoint Root Folder ;
    1. You should have a folder called WarmUp in the following folder : %CommonProgramFiles%\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\14
    2. You should have the following files :
      1. %CommonProgramFiles%\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\14\WarmUp\WarmUp.ps1
      2. %CommonProgramFiles%\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\14\WarmUp\WarmUpdator.ps1
      3. %CommonProgramFiles%\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\14\WarmUp\Urls.Auto.txt
      4. %CommonProgramFiles%\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\14\WarmUp\Urls.Include.txt
      5. %CommonProgramFiles%\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\14\WarmUp\Urls.Exclude.txt
  2. Set Full Control for the SP_WarmUp user on the %CommonProgramFiles%\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\14\WarmUp folder ;
  3. In the WarmUp folder, run the WarmUpdator.ps1 script as a Farm Administrator ;
  4. Check that the file Urls.Auto.txt contains all Urls that must be warmed up ;
  5. Modify the file Urls.Include.txt to add any extra Url to be warmed up (this step is optional if all Urls are in the Urls.Auto.txt file) ;
  6. Modify the file Urls.Exclude.txt to exclude any Url to be warmed up (this step is optional if there is no need to exclude an Url from the files Urls.Auto.txt or Urls.Include.txt);
  7. In Windows Task Scheduler create a task to run the script WarmUp.ps1 under the domain user account SP_WarmUp. Configure this task to be started later than the recycling date of SharePoint sites.

This warmup utility logs on disk, in the WarmUp folder, the following information:
  1. Url that has been touched ;
  2. Server response time ;
  3. Size of the Web Page ;
  4. Correlation Id that has been generated on server side, so you can track any issue with the SharePoint log files.

Each Url is requested twice in order to measure response time after warmup, so you can check performance boost or detect abnormal response time.
